Virginia Tau Alumni Association

 Our Purpose

The purpose of the Virginia Tau Chapter Alumni Association of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is to promote the lasting bonds of brotherhood formed at the University of Richmond.

In particular, the Alumni Association will serve as a vehicle to enhance its members' overall Fraternity experience by fostering communication amongst its members, by offering networking opportunities, by promoting friendship building activities, and by increasing involvement with the Chapter and University.

Moreover, the Alumni Association will support the Chapter and its members in fulfilling their aspirations by promoting leadership and personal development programs, by role modeling the ideals embodied in The True Gentleman, and by instilling the values of the Fraternity as espoused in our Ritual.

Finally, Alumni Association members will actively serve as the Alumni Advisory Board to the Chapter as well as administer the Virginia Tau Chapter Education Fund in conjunction with the ΣΑΕ Foundation.

Common Alumni Questions

Q: What volunteer opportunities are there for me with SAE and Virginia Tau?

A: The volunteer structure has numerous opportunities: on the local level as chapter adviser or house corporation member, regionally as a province archon or province council member, and nationally as a board member or committee member. Less structured volunteer opportunities are also available. Consider mentoring an officer or undergraduate member, helping Virginia Tau conduct a goal-setting retreat or an initiation ceremony, sharing career-planning tips or helping seniors prepare résumés. For more information or to get involved, contact Ryan Bertram at
BertSAE1@aol.com or Cliff Yee at cliff_yee@yahoo.com

Q: How can I contact brothers from Virginia Tau or my era?

A: Initiated brothers in good standing can access their personal membership record by logging into the Members only section of
www.sae.net. SAE Forum allows initiated brothers to search for any member who the national office has a valid address for. Accessing the portal allows members to update their individual records, conduct searches of the membership database, and access official documents such as meeting minutes and audited financial statements. The Gentlemen’s Circle area allows any initiated brother the ability to set up their own online social network of SAEs from all over the nation. Gentlemen’s Circle has message boards, personal profiles, and social and professional networking opportunities as well as a job board.

Q: How do I join the Virginia Tau Alumni Association?

A: Any member of Virginia Tau in good standing can join the Virginia Tau Alumni Association. The association communicates regularly with members via e-mail. Currently, the association does not assess individual membership dues but does pay annual dues of $75 to the Fraternity Service Center. These dues provide for service to alumni associations by the Fraternity Service Center and voting rights at biennial fraternity conventions. For more information, contact Ryan Bertram at
BertSAE1@aol.com or Cliff Yee at cliff_yee@yahoo.com

Q: If I volunteer, am I covered by the Fraternity’s liability insurance?

A: Volunteers of SAE are insured under the liability insurance program while acting within the scope of their volunteer duties. The general liability policy covers brothers for claims arising from allegations of negligence or personal injury. For more information, contact Coordinator of Risk Management and Redevelopment Tim Samp at (800) 233-1856, ext. 239, or at
tsamp@sae.net.

Q: How can I financially support Virginia Tau, the Fraternity, or Foundation?

A: Non tax-deductible gifts of support can be made to the Fraternity to support a member, chapter, or program. Tax-deductible gifts can be made to the Foundation to support the Virginia Tau Chapter Education Fund (CEF), Leadership School, a named scholarship, or The True Gentleman Initiative Program through supporting cash, checks, or appreciated stock. The Virginia Tau CEF provides an annual scholarship for an undergraduate brother to attend Leadership School each summer. To donate, contact Director of Annual Giving Chris Speelman at (800) 233-1856, ext. 221, or at
cspeelman@sae.net.

Q: Why do I no longer receive The Record?

A: All members in good standing are required by the Fraternity Laws to receive the annual report issue of The Record. Three other issues are mailed to brothers who have met the $100 lifetime giving level to the SAE Foundation. Many members after graduation do not update their mailing address, so The Record goes to their parents. Other alumni do not update their addresses after moving. You can update your address by clicking on the following link:

http://www.sae.net/index.asp?r=fraternity&sr=member_update&ssr=member_update

Q: How do I recommend a young man for membership in Virginia Tau?

A: There are several ways to recommend an individual to become a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. You can send an e-mail to Director of Chapter Development Mike Corelli at
mcorelli@sae.net. Include the individual’s name, any other relevant facts including hobbies, GPA, and/or athletics, as well as contact information, including e-mail address. This information will be forwarded to Virginia Tau and the chapter’s adviser.
