An explanation of the terms used in this web site that may not be obvious to either Jewish students or prospective Jewish students.   

 

AIPAC (The American Israel Public Affairs Committee) – America's Pro-Israel lobbyist organization.  UR Hillel encourages multiple points of view on Israeli politics.

 

Conferences – National Jewish conferences that encourage leadership, education, and awareness

 

Finals Snack Packages – Distributing Finals Snack packages (filled with goodies to get you through exam time!) to the Hillel students wishing them good luck on their final exams and a happy and safe summer vacation

 

Havdallah – Saturday evening service and the end of Shabbat. During the warmer months, we have a Havdallah service in the gazebo in the middle of the lake while singing Jewish songs

 

Heilman Dining Hall – the main dining hall on campus, located on the Westhampton side of the school

 

Hillel – The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life that unites Jewish students on university campuses. Hillel provides a variety of opportunities for students to meet other Jewish students and participate in educational and social programs. The University of Richmond has recently become affiliated with Hillel. The University of Richmond Hillel is formerly known as the Richmond Jewish Student Association (RJSA). 

 

Interfaith Passover Seder – before Passover, Hillel invites members of the other religious organizations on campus to join Hillel in the Passover Seder and to learn about the history of Passover. The Weinstein and Rosenthal families sponsor this event. 

 

Interfaith Thanksgiving Dinner -- before Thanksgiving, Hillel invites members of the other religious organizations on campus to join Hillel in the Thanksgiving Dinner. The Weinstein and Rosenthal families sponsor this event.

 

Israel at Heart -- A Lunch and Learn program where Hillel was able to meet and talk with three college-age Israelis who have known the terror, war, and hope of life in Israel. Dafna Kiro, Omar Eshel, and Oren Keston spoke of their experiences while living in Israel that moved the audience. This program was opened to the entire campus.

 

Local Chapters – the Local Hillel chapters that the University of Richmond Hillel often coordinates events with are the University of Richmond Law School, VCU, and MCV 

 

Lunch and Learn – During a lunch hour that all students have off of class, Hillel invites speakers to talk about a current Jewish issue of interest while Hillel serves lunch

 

Medical Ethics Dinner – A Rabbi, UR Law student, and an MCV Medical student debate a current issue about Medical Ethics from their profession’s point-of-view at a dinner at the JCC of Richmond

 

Orientation – During the first Sunday of orientation in August, Hillel has a table on the Chapel Lawn along with other religious organizations. Some of the current members are ready and excited to meet the new incoming students. Attending this event is an excellent way to get involved, meet the leaders of Hillel, and meet other incoming Jewish students

 

Weinstein JCC (Jewish Community Center of Richmond) – Only a five-minute drive from campus and offers services and programs to Jewish people and their fitness programs are open to the general Richmond community

 

Shabbaton – A weekend in April when 12 Hillel chapters from Virginia attend exciting programs and have the chance to meet other Jewish students at the JCC in Richmond

 

Thanksgiving Interfaith Dinner – before going home to celebrate Thanksgiving with our families, Hillel invites members of the other religious organizations on campus to join us in our Thanksgiving Feast. The Weinstein and Rosenthal families sponsor this event. 

 

Wilton Center for Interfaith Campus Ministries – A building on campus, between the Student Commons and the Cannon Memorial Chapel where many of the Hillel events are located

 

Yom Hashoah – Holocaust Remembrance Day
