About
the UR Hillel:
The beautiful campus of the
University of Richmond is located in the suburbs of Richmond,
Virginia and is the home to approximately 3,000 undergraduate
students. There is an active Hillel chapter at the University
of Richmond that sponsors a diverse and exciting assortment of
activities ranging from desserts and dinners at local restaurants
to on-campus Havdallah services and lunches.
Our programs include social,
religious, interfaith, and educational programs.
We coordinate transportation to local synagogues for the High
Holidays and celebrate the other Jewish holidays with programs
that have included on campus Sukkah raisings, a student organized
Passover Seder, and an annual Hanukkah party. There are three
Orthodox synagogues, two Conservative synagogues, and two Reform
synagogues in the Richmond area. The city of Richmond is home
to The Virginia Holocaust Museum and Virginia Congressman Eric
Cantor (who is also Jewish).
Hillel events often include
students from the other Richmond colleges: Virginia Commonwealth
University, Medical College of Virginia, and the University of
Richmond School of Law. The Weinstein Jewish Community Center is located only five minutes from campus and gives students the
opportunity to meet other local Jewish students, use the facilities,
and attend its programs.
Weinstein
Hall has recently been constructed on campus and it is the centerpiece
of the Social Science Initiative. Carole and Marcus Weinstein
and their family and friends have donated about $12 million to bring
this building to life. The Weinstein family sponsors Hillel’s
Interfaith Thanksgiving Dinner, Interfaith Passover Seder, and
the local Richmond Hillel chapters. We're so grateful for the
contributions the Weinstein family has bestowed upon our campus. The Jewish Studies Minor offers
classes at the University of Richmond and works in collaboration
with Virginia Commonwealth University.
