Delta Sigma Theta has special status
as an NGO in the UN In March of 2003, Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. was granted NGO status in the UN. An NGO is a non-governmental organization
that is not funded by the states. They
are social, cultural, legal, and environmental advocacy groups that are
recognized for doing important volunteer work throughout the world. In addition, Delta Sigma Theta was granted
Special Consultative Status as an NGO to the Economic and Social Council of
the UN as a result of its volunteer services and humanitarian efforts
performed to address issues throughout the world. Delta Sigma Theta is one of the few
African-American women’s organizations to be credentialed by the United
Nations with NGO Consultative status. Delta Sigma Theta is the LARGEST
organization of women and the LARGEST African-American
Greek-lettered organization in the world. The Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta has
a membership of over 250,000 predominantly African-American, college-educated
women. The sorority has over 900
alumnae and collegiate chapters located in the United States; Tokyo, Japan; Okinawa, Japan; Germany, Bermuda; the Bahamas,
Seoul, Korea; St. Thomas and St. Croix Virgin Islands and Jamaica. Delta Sigma Theta opened the first
hospital in Kenya following its independence (Thika Memorial
Hospital, now known as Mary Help of the Sick Missions
Hospital) In response to the newly independent nation
of Kenya needing a quality facility for childbirth, Delta Sigma Theta opened
Thika Memorial Hospital. Plans began
in 1955 and the facility was completed in the 1960s. Today, the facility serves as a training
for facility for nurses and midwives and provides pre-natal and post-natal
care, a special care nursery, lab work and blood tests. Today it is operated by the missionary
