Boaz & Ruth

Boaz & Ruth is a nonprofit organization that provides on-the-job and beyond-the-job training as well as caring and coaching relationships for ex-offenders. The organization’s social missions are to provide job training for individuals needing a second chance (primarily reentry support for ex-offenders); to foster commercial revitalization for Highland Park (a severely blighted area of Richmond); and to bridge culturally and economically disparate communities within the metropolitan area. Boaz & Ruth believes that social change comes best through human relationships; that everyone has both gifts and needs; and that by sharing both the giver and receiver are changed.
Chandler Middle School

Chandler Middle School (grades 6-8) is part of the Richmond Public School system and is located in the Northside neighborhood of Highland Park. Chandler is seeking accreditation. Approximately 533 students attend the school. More than 85 percent are considered economically disadvantaged. About 27 percent have disabilities. Chandler's mission is ensure that every child experiences the joy of dreaming, learning, and living in a non-threatening environment with the resources to meet his/her individual needs, as they become independent lifelong learners.
Hotchkiss Field Community Center

The Hotchkiss Field Community Center is located in the heart of the Highland Park community and is a part of the City of Richmond's Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. Hotchkiss offers activities for citizens of all ages. Programs range from after-school activities, athletic leagues and a computer lab to the daily Kid's Cafe, which provides at hot meal each evening from approximately 4:30 - 6 p.m.
John Marshall High School

John Marshall High School (grades 9-12) is part of the Richmond Public School system and is located in the Northside neighborhood of Ginter Park. John Marshall is fully accredited. Approximately 950 students attend the school. More than 35 percent are considered economically disadvantaged. About 28 percent have disabilities. All programs offered at John Marshall are designed to address the needs of a diverse group of students. The individual needs of its students are met though the flexible design of the curriculum and a commitment to the philosophy that every student can learn.
Overby-Sheppard Elementary School

Overby-Sheppard Elementary School (grades K-5) is is part of the Richmond Public School system and is located in the Northside neighborhood of Highland Park. Overby-Sheppard is fully accredited. Approximately 400 students attend the school. More than 70 percent are considered economically disadvantaged. About 14 percent have disabilities. Overby-Sheppard is committed to providing an instructional environment where students are proficient in the areas of oral and written communication, mathematics, science, social science, and technology, and to working collaboratively with students, parents, and the community to prepare students to become productive citizens in an ever-changing society.
Reach Out and Read Virginia

Affiliated with Partnership for Families – Northside, Reach Out and Read works within pediatric primary care facilities in Northside and Church Hill neighborhoods to offer books and literacy education to families with young children. Participating pediatricians provide new books during well-child visits to patients of the ages 6 months to 5 years, and encourages the parents of these children to read aloud to them at home. The Reach Out and Read model is applied in more than 2,000 programs throughout the United States, and is designed to make books a routine part of primary health care so that children grow up with a love of books and reading
William Byrd Community House

The William Byrd Community House has been a leader in supporting inner-city neighborhoods with services since 1923. The WBCH is dedicated to strengthening families, neighborhoods and Richmond through adequate housing, health care, and educational and employment opportunities to help people achieve self-sufficiency. The WBCH is expanding its operations to include a culturally competent teen drop-in center led by and serving teens and young adults living in the Highland Park area.
